How to Apply Rubberseal Liquid Rubber
Rubberseal liquid rubber is a cold-applied, water-based waterproofing coating that goes on with a roller, brush, or trowel. Follow these steps for a seamless, durable membrane. For safety information see our MSDS & Data Sheets, and use the coverage calculator to estimate how much product you need.
1. Substrate Preparation
- All substrates must be structurally sound, dry, solid, and stable. The surface must be clean of dirt, oil, and grease and free of loose material. Power washing with water only (no chemical additives) is recommended.
- The surface may be damp but not wet. Any running water must be sealed or contained through relief pipes, as commonly used in grouting work.
- Mechanically clean the area to be sealed using a stiff wire brush or equivalent.
- Complete any structural repairs to the substrate before applying Rubberseal Roll-On or Trowel grade.
- When applying over an existing Rubberseal installation, thoroughly wash the area with fresh water and wipe dry before applying new material.
2. Mixing
- Mix Rubberseal Roll Grade thoroughly with a paddle mixer at slow speed (approximately 100 RPM). Mixing at medium or high speed can separate the polymer and create small chunks in the product.
- Mix for 5 minutes before installation, until the material is completely homogeneous. If the product sits for more than 3 hours, remix for 5 minutes.
- Do not add water, solvents, or any other materials to the product.
- Choose appropriate safety equipment before use — refer to the MSDS for details.
3. Application
Rubberseal can be applied to new or existing roofs (including RV roofs), pools, ponds, foundations, flooring, planters, marine surfaces, and more.
Roll On Grade is a waterproofing membrane system that fits almost any surface. It stops moisture from infiltrating and damaging the structure, with excellent chemical resistance, puncture resistance, and adhesion.
Trowel On Grade is ideal for detailing strips, corners, and approaches, or for creating a slope to control drainage. Where a heavier build is required, Rubberseal Trowel Grade can be applied up to 1″ (25 mm) thick in isolated areas.
Available sizes: 16 oz, 32 oz, 1 gallon, 2 gallons, and 5 gallons.
4. Coverage Rate
- Spread rate: 1 coat equals roughly 5 mils of thickness.
- 12 coats build to about 60 mils of waterproofing thickness.

5. Cleaning Up
- Clean equipment with water or mineral spirits.
- Use baby oil or WD-40 to remove Rubberseal from your hands or other surfaces.
- Wear rubber gloves when handling geotextile fabric.
