How to Seal a Pond with Liquid Rubber (Step by Step)

A pond is one of the hardest waterproofing jobs there is: constant, standing water pressing on the surface day and night. That is exactly what Rubberseal Black is built for. It rolls or trowels on cold and cures into one seamless, flexible membrane — no folds, no overlaps, no seams to fail. Here is how to seal a backyard pond, fountain, or concrete water feature the right way.

Why Black, and why a liquid membrane

A folded liner works, but every seam and overlap is a place a leak can start, and fitting one around ledges and irregular shapes is fiddly. A liquid-applied membrane takes the shape of whatever you coat — a single continuous skin over concrete, block, or an existing hard shell — and it bridges the hairline and shrinkage cracks that open as the structure settles.

Step 1 — Prepare the surface

Adhesion starts with a sound, clean surface. The substrate must be structurally repaired and free of dust, oil, grease, curing compounds, and loose material. Concrete can be damp but not wet — stop or divert any active water flow before you coat. Fill deep cracks and voids with trowel-grade sealant, and reinforce corners, cold joints, and pipe penetrations with Rubberseal Geotextile fabric embedded between coats. Skipping prep is the most common reason any waterproofing job disappoints.

Step 2 — Build the membrane in coats

Apply Rubberseal Black in multiple coats with a 3/8-inch nap roller between 50–95°F, letting each coat dry before the next. Where water will stand, build to at least 60 mils dry film. Plan on roughly 32 sq ft per gallon at 40 mils — our coverage calculator will estimate the gallons your pond needs. Embed geotextile over every crack and transition as you go for a stronger, gap-free build.

Step 3 — Cure and flood-test

You can flood-test about 24 hours after the final coat, with full cure in roughly 72 hours at 70°F — longer in cool or humid conditions. Fill slowly and check your work before returning the feature to regular use.

A note on fish and aquatic life

We want to be straight with you: we have not completed aquatic-safety certification, so we do not make fish-safety claims for Rubberseal.
